2014 LHS Celebration

HERE WE GO AGAIN

ANOTHER OLD LHS CELEBRATION

A REUNION ON THE SQUARE

SEPTEMBER 13, 2014

Need some explanation?  LHS:  Liberty High School.

What we still think of as the High School.  We find it necessary to call it the old High School.  Because they built a new high school.  Forty years ago.  Further complication.  There is now an even newer high school in the northern reaches of the school district.  Most folks call it North Liberty High School.  I think we should refer to it as Roosterville High.

Who is invited to the celebration?  Everybody who went to high school where we went to high school.  That covers the classes which graduated from 1928 to 1975.

Won't that make it quite crowded on the square?  Probably not.  The youngest of the crowd graduated almost forty years ago.

What are we celebrating?  Apart from simply surviving this long, how about having friends we have had for sixty or seventy years?

Why attend?  Where else might you hear someone say, “You haven't changed a bit!”?  If that is not enough, have in mind the success of the first Old LHS Reunion three years ago.  Despite some logistical problems, a lot of good times were had, good enough to bring about all the work that has gone into putting together another reunion three years later.  Good enough for the date of the third Old LHS Reunion to have been set for the second Saturday in September, 2017.  Only the optimists among us will be thinking they should just wait for the next one.

Those who were part of the 2011 gathering are likely to return.  To further encourage them, be advised that the public address system this time will be heard all around the square.  That will be a big improvement that should let us be where we need to be for the Class of '56 picture.  When our picture will be taken is uncertain.  Picture taking starts at 5:00 but it ought to go pretty fast.  How long do you think it will take to get to the classes of the 50's?  The 1940 grads turn 91 this year.  Should you wish to document that we haven't changed a bit, you can buy a copy of the picture for $10.00 and take it home with you that evening..

Official starting time is 4:00.  In the unlikely event that you are still on the square at midnight, you will be asked to leave.

Each class will have a 10 by 10 booth, complete with some chairs.  Our booth will be on the west side of the square, just like last time.  Look for  a much bigger than life blue jay with “56”      written on it.  When you get tired of circulating around the square seeing people you haven't seen for years (who need to be told they haven't changed a bit), drift back to the west side of the square where most of the 50's classes have their gathering spots (with chairs).

Compared to the first Old LHS Reunion, there will be a much greater opportunity to enjoy food and drink  several restaurants will have booths on the square.  Here's something important.  When you enter the square at one of the four corners, folks there will put a bracelet on your wrist and collect your “donation”.  Five dollars per person is suggested.  Good sound systems don't come cheap.  The good news is that the bracelet will allow you to get an adult beverage without having to document your age.

Restaurants on or near the square will also be open for business.  There may be some among us who think sitting at a table in air-conditioned comfort and being waited on is preferable to standing in line at a booth to get food to be eaten while standing or using a lap for a table.  The bracelet is of no consequence inside the restaurants.  If an adult beverage is desired, you may have to document your age.

The DJ with good music (that the better sound system will allow to be heard) won't start until 7:00.

On the south side of the square, a program of some sort will be presented at 7:30.

Should you want to see what time has done to Old LHS, now officially known as Heritage Middle School, there will be a tour offered at 1:00.  That should leave time for a nap before the festivities on the square begin.  If you find yourself thinking the building has held up better than its graduates, have in mind that there have been interventions over the years.  Cher and Joan Rivers may come to mind.

Off street parking will be available at three locations: the Presbyterian Church at the corner of Gallatin and Mississippi; the Hillcrest Hope Thrift Store at the corner of Gallatin and Mill; and the Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home at the corner of Missouri and Franklin.  There will be shuttle service to the square as needed.  If you take advantage, be sure to ask the driver how and where to catch a return shuttle.

The more of us from the 50's and early 60's that find our way there, the more fun it will be for everybody.
