Education and Professional Career: Immediately after high school I attended William Jewell College majoring in Chemistry and minoring in Mathematics. After Jewell I continued my education at the University of Illinois and received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with minors in Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. During my graduate studies I had two very exciting summer positions. One was doing nuclear magnetic resonance studies at Argonne National Laboratory and the other working as a researcher developing new drugs with Eli Lilly Company. |
I started my professional career as a research chemist for Phillips Petroleum Company. I had the good fortune of being offered a position allowing me to conduct purely fundamental research. In my first four years I obtained sixteen U.S. Patents. While I was at Phillips I had an offer of a tenure tract teaching position at Indiana State University Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana). Having teaching always in the back of my mind I accepted the position and had a very wonderful and rewarding career at the University of Southern Indiana. After thirty very wonderful years of teaching and research I retired as a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry in 1999.
Personal and Family Life:
After completing my first year of graduate school Barbara Vaughn and I were married. Four years later I accepted my first professional position, and we moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and started our family. Brian, our son, is presently the vice president of Hightower Corporation in Skokie, Illinois and our daughter Becky teaches mathematics in Kansas City, MO. We have a grandson from each and really enjoy being grandparents every chance we get.
During her career Barbara taught music to over 10,000 students at the Mt. Vernon, Indiana Junior High School while I was teaching at the University of Southern Indiana. In 1999 we both retired and moved full time to our home on Lake Barkley near Cadiz, KY. We both enjoy the sunrise over the lake every morning and count our many blessings.
Since retirement Barbara does lots of volunteer work, and I have activated many hobbies. I have a woodworking shop and love to build furniture and other items out of wood. I have also taken up trap and skeet shooting, pistol shooting, and more recently small bore rifle shooting. Even though I can hit flies consistently at fifty yards that was not good enough to beat the National Small Bore Rifle champion. He gave me a real shellacking in our last match.
